What a Dog Taught Me About Connection, Intuition, and the Life Beyond Form

By Dr. Darla Rewers, DVM

What if the wisest teacher in your life had four paws and knew things before you did?

Sophi: What a Dog Taught Me About Connection, Intuition, and the Life Beyond Form is part memoir, part integrative medicine guide, and part love letter to a dog named Sophi, and to every animal who has ever asked something of us that we were almost wise enough to hear.

Written by holistic veterinarian Dr. Darla Rewers, DVM, this extraordinary book moves between two voices: that of Darla, grounded in decades of clinical practice, shamanic training, and a lifetime in relationship with animals; and that of Sophi, an Australian shepherd mix who spent seventeen years quietly teaching her human to pay attention. The result is unlike anything in the world of pet or wellness books.

Organized into eight parts, Sophi explores the spiritual and scientific dimensions of our bond with animals, covering everything from acupuncture, Reiki, and flower essences to grief, gut health, nutrition, and the mystery of animal communication. But beneath every chapter runs the same quiet question: What are animals actually showing us about how to live?

For pet owners, animal lovers, wellness seekers, and anyone who has ever looked into the eyes of an animal and felt something vast look back.

Wisdom, it turns out, has always been right beside you.

When I was a dog, sometimes I let the tall grass swallow me whole, and I lit up and wondered whether I was a dog with spirit or a spirit traveling in a dog.

About Darla

Dr. Darla Rewers, DVM, has been helping people through her paintings, pottery, and jewelry since a young age. She has been healing pets and their people through natural medicine since 2002.

Darla is a graduate of the University of Florida’s College of Veterinary Medicine, and earned her acupuncture certifications through the Chi Institute—now the Chi University—in Reddick, Florida, and the American Institute of Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine in Seattle, Washington.

In addition to her qualifications as a veterinarian, Darla holds a B.A. in Art and Biology from the University of Indianapolis, with a minor in Spanish. Her art incorporates her celebration of traditional healing beliefs and philosophies, using mixed media, sacred geometry, reclaimed items, and elements from nature. Her healing art can be found in private collections across the globe.

Darla currently lives in Seattle, with her urban farm animals. Her holistic veterinary clinic and healing arts gallery, Ancient Arts, is in the city’s Greenwood neighbourhood.

I started this book over ten years ago when facing putting my soul dog to sleep. She had helped me through so many formative events in my life. Pets are the powerhouse of what keeps me motivated and joyful. I want to support them and the other people who love and rely on them.
