Author Gwyn Teatro’s Award-Winning Work Narrated by Vancouver Media Personality Lynda Steele
August 11, 2022 — Vancouver, Canada. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE. Today marks the release of the audiobook of “In the Thick of It: Mastering the Art of Leading from the Middle” by Gwyn Teatro of North Vancouver. Journalist, TV/radio host, and media consultant Lynda Steele is the book’s narrator.
“I loved the challenge of bringing Gwyn Teatro’s wise and colourful leadership book, In the Thick of It, to life,” said Lynda. “But I’ll admit, it was not easy. After four decades of working in professional broadcast studios as a news anchor and radio talk show host, I quickly discovered that home office recording is a whole other beast!”
The book, first published by Ingenium Books in 2019, has achieved several accolades:
Canadian Book Club Awards 2021 finalist
In the Thick of It was selected as a finalist in the Business/Self-Help category of the Canadian Book Club Awards, Canada’s largest reader’s choice book awards.
With In the Thick of It, Gwyn was also the winning author in two categories of the International Impact Book Awards 2021: the Management and Motivational categories.
Writing In The Thick of It
Teatro had thought her writing days were over, that she’d said all she had to say about leadership and people and workplaces. Three years after she stopped writing regularly for her blog, “You’re Not the Boss of Me”, she found herself writing a book. Of course it was a book about leadership, but also about the zoo that is life.
“It took a long time for me to make up my mind,” Teatro said. “There are so many books about leadership I saw little point in adding to the mix. I didn’t want to do it simply to feed my ego. I wanted to, well, write with purpose. A more useful purpose.”
Teatro considered that some people write leadership books for executives because there’s a lot of leverage, influence, and money there. Others write for the new generation of leaders, aiming to help them blossom. She found fewer people were writing books about leadership for those in the middle. The leaders who reach middle management in middle age and wonder if that’s all there is.
“I began writing for them, because their potential for greater contribution and greater fulfillment should not be discounted,” Teatro said. “My book is designed to help these mid-career leaders expand their ideas about leadership; increase self-awareness, and reflect on their own lives and leadership; plan for change and learn some practical responses to everyday leadership challenges.”
In the Thick of It is also a book to inspire readers to take considered risks; achieve their intended goals, and move closer to the attainment of their ideal future.
“It sounds rather lofty doesn’t it?” she says. “The thing is, I believe it possible for all of us to do more than we feel capable of. It’s hard, but possible.”
As for Lynda’s narration of the audiobook, that too proved hard, but possible.
“A troublesome echo required a DIY solution. It meant spending 40 plus hours with my head stuffed inside a cardboard box full of eggshell foam and gaffer tape and a moving blanket draped over top for good measure,” Lynda said. “Needless to say it was rather warm and stuffy during the recordings, but ‘the box’ got the job done. “I learned a lot about leadership in the process and I think I lost a couple of pounds at the same time.”
