FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE — Toronto, ON, Friday, March 14, 2025. Ingenium Books is set to publish a gripping new surrogacy memoir this year. The Heart of a Surrogate (working title) is author Jennifer Hansen’s honest, no-holds-barred account of the emotional battle between her and the intended parents during her first experience as a surrogate.
“I harboured so much anger and frustration with the turnout of my journey that it took many, many years and even another surrogacy—I was a surrogate a second time eight years later—to heal,” Hansen says. “I wrote this book to educate other surrogates on the dedicated sacrifice and courage it takes to become a surrogate.”
Hansen hopes that her book will help especially three groups of people: prospective surrogates, who will gain insight into what they may need to successfully process through surrogacy; intended parents, who will gain wisdom and insight regarding the emotional process a surrogate embarks upon; and fertility clinics, where a personal connection is often missing when describing the process to a surrogate.
“This book is the book I wanted to read when I first became a surrogate,” Hansen, who is originally from Nebraska, says. “I wanted to know about the personal experience of a woman who carried a child for someone else, and I could not find a memoir from a surrogate.”
According to market research company IMARC Group’s research into surrogacy, the global surrogacy market reached a size of USD194 million in 2024. It is expected to grow to USD321.4 million by 2033.
“While we hope that this book will help prepare prospective surrogates for the physical and emotional toll that the journey will take, The Heart of a Surrogate is more than just a surrogacy book,” says Boni Wagner-Stafford, publisher at Ingenium Books. “It is a raw, honest telling of the mettle it takes to do something so completely selfless for someone else. These days we all need a reminder that not everyone is always in it for themselves.”
The Heart of a Surrogate is slated for release in July 2025.
