The book argues that the instability, divisiveness, and emotional intensity shaping life in the United States today cannot be fully understood through politics or ideology alone. Instead, Dr. Hutchison proposes that the country is living with the long-term psychological effects of unresolved collective trauma—a state resembling mild to moderate PTSD that is being spread through emotional contagion.

“This book is both an explanation and an intervention,” says Dr. Hutchison. “Political scientists and journalists often miss the invisible force of emotion that is driving our current chaos. I wanted to put two and two together in a way no one else has, helping people understand why our public discourse feels so fragile and how we can begin to lower the social temperature without division.”

Dr. Hutchison brings decades of clinical expertise to the project. He holds a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Ottawa, and is also the author of Emotions Don’t Think: Emotional Contagion in a Time of Turmoil and The Secret to Loving Connections: How Emotional Contagion Leads to Success in Relationships. He has worked in settings such as prisons, hospitals, and private practice, and his work has included assessing many individuals as to their psychological suitability to handle firearms.

Now retired, Dr. Hutchison takes a larger perspective on his view of the world’s political situation. “I bring an often ignored but essential psychological perspective to understand the turmoil and chaos in the world today,” he explains. “As a life-long avid follower of American politics, I am qualified to do an umbrella assessment such as I offer in this book because my wide range of experiences as a clinical psychologist, professor, and advocate for psychology in professional associations allows me to integrate this much-needed knowledge to this crucial area.”
