Toronto, ON – Marty Britton, President and CEO of Britton Management Profiles Inc., is publishing her first book with Ingenium Books. Screening for the One: How to Gain an Edge in Your Hiring looks at background screening and is an invaluable book for hiring managers.
Britton Management Profiles Inc. (BMP) was the first company in Canada to specialize in background screening and is celebrating fifty years in the industry this year. Marty Britton, a former civil engineering technician, took over the running of the company from her father, David Britton, in 1994 when his health declined. She has since expanded the company’s expertise and the pre-employment screening services they provide, to keep up with a changing world. In 2020, she served as chair of the Canadian board of the Professional Background Screening Association (PBSA).
“In Screening for the One I share BMP’s expertise to help HR professionals in making the right hire,” Britton says. “Nothing is more crucial for someone responsible for staffing than getting to know a candidate before making an offer. Yet, because some candidates embellish, omit, and even outright lie on resumes and in interviews, you may go through the time-consuming and costly process of hiring and onboarding your newest employee, only to realize you didn’t hire who you thought you were hiring—and that you need to go through the recruitment process again to find the right fit for the job.”
“Background screening is an issue that our remote work trend is making more important, not just for the workplace but also for integrity and trust in general,” says Ingenium Books publisher Boni Wagner-Stafford. “We can't think of anyone better-positioned to contribute to conversations in this space than Marty Britton.”
Background screening is a growing industry worldwide and not only involves verifying a job candidate’s identity, references, work history and education, but can also include other screenings, including social media activity.
Recent high-profile cases such as that of Brigitte Cleroux, who used a stolen identity and fake references to get hired as a nurse by various healthcare facilities, have illustrated just how important it is for employers to verify the information that they receive from prospective employees before hiring them.
