The Wine Lover's Introduction to Cannabis
By Jackie McAskill
Exploring the exciting intersection of wine and weed.
Shortly after that, wine clubs started to boom, popularizing tastings, wine parties, and greatly increasing the average person’s interest in and knowledge of wines.
With the legalization and accessibility of cannabis sweeping across North America and beyond, the mainstreaming of marijuana has ushered in a new crop of consumers.
Welcome to Chill: The Wine Lover's Introduction to Cannabis, a unique guide that blends the elegance of wine culture with the emerging world of cannabis.
Chill offers a fresh perspective on cannabis consumption, reminiscent of beginner's wine guides, tackling the questions you've hesitated to ask. From understanding different strains to mastering the art of social smoking, this book is your go-to companion on the journey to cannabis enlightenment.
When I was growing up, wine was synonymous with celebration, class, and sophistication. Weed, on the other hand, was a pineapple express train straight to Hell. That’s what parents and teachers told me, and that’s what I believed. In Canada, we had been just as well trained to “just say no” as our American cousins.
So, while I have always been comfortable with wine, I felt weird about weed. Getting to know cannabis was a lifelong toe-dipping exercise. It took years to break through those family and social barriers, get educated, and give myself permission to choose what’s best for me.

Drawing parallels between popular cannabis strains and beloved wine varietals, Chill invites you to savour the nuances of both worlds. About Jackie
Jackie brings over twenty years of industry-relevant experience to her business, clients, and to readers of her book, Chill: The Wine Lover's Introduction to Cannabis.
Prior to co-founding Sheesh Sodas, Jackie was the category director at Hexo Corporation, one of Canada's largest licensed cannabis producers at the time and now owned by Tilray, where she oversaw edibles, dried flower, and pre-rolls. Her introduction of nearly 100 products into the market took her categories from fifth- to first-place market share in under a year.
Jackie spent more than a decade as a buyer for one of the world's largest alcoholic beverage purchasers, the Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO), where she launched many iconic brands into the Canadian retail space. In 2016, Jackie founded her own consulting company, BevPro Canada Inc., successfully supporting new businesses launched into a congested alcoholic beverage retail landscape.
Let me say that this book is not intended to convert you from wine- to weed-lover. Instead, I hope to empower you to expand your life's experiences and broaden the field of pleasures available to you. You are in control, and ultimately you decide what has a place in your life and what doesn't."
—Jackie McAskill, Chill: The Wine Lover's Introduction to Cannabis
”A colorful and winningly friendly guide to the world of cannabis.”
McAskill understands the reservations many entrepreneurs in the wine world may have toward cannabis; she felt them herself. She uses these pages to explain the history and basics of cannabis, pointing out its use since antiquity and peppering her chapters with “Chill Facts” like, “Cannabis bath bombs are an increasingly popular dispensary product.” She describes the various means of ingesting cannabis, from smoking to eating to placing “tincture' strips under the tongue. She breaks down the chemical makeups of all the various cannabinoids and popular commercial strains, and details the various different physical effects they have, discussing specifics like solvents, distillates, and TCH and CBD levels.
The book’s chapters are all playfully and helpfully illustrated, with subsections and numbered points aimed both at the general reader and the budding (no pun intended) business person looking to learn the mechanics and nuances of this new industry. McAskill makes the very wise decision to address potential anxiety on the part of newcomers by adopting a happy, joshing tone throughout, whether describing the nuts and bolts of the industry or the different types of cannabis products (“On the herbal side, Maui Wowie is the perfect beach babe,” she writes. “She has a way of making stress melt away.”) The author adopts a calm, funny, self-deprecating tone that’s perfect for defusing the tension around her subject as she urges her readers to ”Just keep it low and slow.”
