FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE—Toronto, ON, Friday, April 25, 2025 – Veteran investigative journalist and former president of the Canadian Association of Journalists Paul Schneidereit has signed with Ingenium Books to publish a nonfiction, true crime book. Do Them All is about a 1989 triple murder near Antigonish, Nova Scotia, and the subsequent 1990 trial of John Alexander MacKenzie, charged with three counts of first-degree murder.
“I’ve carried this story in the back of my mind since literally the day it happened, more than thirty-five years ago,” Schneidereit said. “I still remember the Sunday in June, 1989, when, as provincial editor for the Halifax daily newspaper I worked for, a budget item came in from our New Glasgow bureau about a triple shooting on Beech Hill Road outside Antigonish. That kind of crime is exceedingly rare in Nova Scotia and so obviously got my full attention. The case was fascinating, the trial result shocking, and the aftermath included appeals all the way to the Supreme Court of Canada.”
In the late ’90s, Schneidereit, working at The Chronicle Herald in Halifax, decided to look at a decade’s worth of homicides in Nova Scotia, covering the years 1988—1998. That led to an award-winning ten-part series called “Who’s Killing Who?’’, with the Beech Hill shootings of June, 1989 becoming the focus of one of those segments.
“I remember chatting with our graphic artist at the time about what a gripping movie the story would make,” Schneidereit said. “Then, about six years ago, I was catching up with my good friend Boni Wagner-Stafford, whom I had met when we were both on the national board of directors of the Canadian Association of Journalists, when she mentioned she was publisher at Ingenium Books. ‘Boni,’ I said, ‘have I got a story for you.’”
The Beech Hill shootings shook the community of Antigonish, a small town known mainly for being the home of St. Francis Xavier University and Canada’s oldest Highland games. More than three decades later, many questions surrounding the case remain unanswered.
“When Paul told me about this story about six years ago, I immediately knew it was a perfect fit for us,” said Boni Wagner-Stafford, publisher at Ingenium Books. “It will encourage the reader to reevaluate their understanding of murder, the reasons for it, and the different ways justice can be served. I’m very excited for a journalist of Paul’s calibre to be the one telling this story.”
Do Them All is slated for publication in early 2026.
